We have the pleasure to inform our readers/members that the Centre for Law and Conflict, School of Law, SOAS, University of London is organising a one-day conference on the theme: the Role of Arbitration Institutions in the Development of Arbitration in Africa, which will hold on Thursday 23 July 2015 in the premises of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa (ETHIOPIA).

Dr Emilia Onyema, Associate Dean, Learning & Teaching at the School of Law SOAS, University of London, United Kingdom and Dr Jean Alain Penda, Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, London, London-United Kingdom, will be respectively convenor and rapporteur of the conference.

The objective of the conference is to examine the creation of an enduring culture for the effective administration of arbitration by institutions in Africa that meets the requirements of its users, as part of the process towards the greater participation of our institutions and cities in the global arbitration space.

An important aspect of the conference will focus on the absolute obligation of arbitration institutions to respect their own bylaws, to abide strictly by their founding charters which are just a reflection of the fundamental principles of arbitration, and to disqualify accordingly delinquent arbitrators in their obligations disclosure, independence and impartiality.

The conference will be attended by arbitration institutions and practitioners within and outside Africa; the judiciary; domestic and foreign investors; domestic and international legal community; funding agencies; commercial parties and their advisors; academics and researchers; and the general public with an interest in commercial dispute resolution.

The OHADA Common Court of Justice and Arbitration is participating at the conference. Its experience and peculiar role as an arbitration institution for all of the OHADA Member States will be discussed.

The language of the conference will be English with simultaneous translation in French/English.
