Within the framework, policy and goals of UNIDA (African Association for a Unified System of Business Laws) to broaden the scope and base the OHADA business law unification process, Prof. Salvatore MANCUSO and Emmanuel CHESAMI MBAH, carried out high level contacts with government officials in Mauritius. Both Promoters of OHADA Business Law in Africa on 25 February, 2008 met with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation: HE Ambassador Neewoor, Mrs. U. DWARKA-CANABADY and Mrs. Dalida ALLAGAPEN. The Director, Mr. ASSAD Bhuglah and Deputy, International Trade Division were also separately met in the same exercise. In all these meetings, the main message was to explain OHADA and the Harmonisation of Business Law in Africa to these officials. In this perspective, both entertained questions from the officials who wanted to know the gains of the country joining OHADA. Satisfactory explanations and the way forward were given. Their interest could not be hidden as resulting from the remarks made during discussions. The next phase of the meeting on February 26, 2008 was with officials of the University of Mauritius under the leadership of the Dean of the faculty and Head of Department, Law of the same institution, Miss Odile LIM TUNG and other officials of the faculty where intellectual debates were held on the need to embrace OHADA and consider the option of including the subject in its curricula as well as to have the cooperation of the Faculty of Law of the University of Mauritius in the organization of a conference on OHADA laws in Mauritius. The debates were very enriching as Miss Odile LIM TUNG left the meeting satisfied and promised to cooperate in the organization of the conference and to work hard to promote OHADA around Mauritius. Further meetings will be held in the near future with other top government Officials to introduce and explain them OHADA and the Harmonisation Process. The Judiciary and other Economic stakeholders in Mauritius and beyond shall be contacted in due course. The final result of this work will be an International Conference on OHADA and the Harmonisation of Business law, Economic Partnership Agreement, Mauritius and Africa. The date of the conference shall be made known as soon as preparatory ground works are complete. UNIDA / OHADA.com will support enthusiastically this OHADA event in Mauritius which will be an emotional moment for all of us committed to OHADA, since we all know that the OHADA treaty, also called the Treaty of Port Louis, was signed in Mauritius, on October 1993.
