SOAS Arbitration in Africa Conferences / Cairo (EGYPT), 3-5 April 2017
We have the pleasure to inform you that the African arbitration research project aimed at “creating a sustainable culture of arbitration as a mechanism for dispute resolution in African States” is organising its third conference on the theme: The Role of African States & Governments in the Development of Arbitration in Africa, on the 3-5 April 2017, at the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration in Cairo (EGYPT).
The conference organisers include Dr Emilia Onyema, of the School of Law, SOAS University of London, United Kingdom and Hon. Justice Edward Torgbor, Professor of Law, former Judge at the Court of Appeal in Kenya and arbitrator based in Nairobi, Kenya; and Dr Jean-Alain Penda, Consultant with PwC, London and OHADA/OHADAC law specialist.
This conference is the third in the series of four planned conferences, which will examine how African States can better support the development of arbitration on the continent
The second conference held last year in Nigeria, examined the role of African courts and judges in supporting arbitration and the papers from that conference are available for download at: http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/22727. The Cairo conference will be attended by prominent members of governments, arbitration institutions, and practitioners, academics and researchers, within and outside Africa; The OHADA Common Court of Justice and Arbitration is participating at the conference. Its experience and peculiar role as an arbitration institution vis-à-vis the OHADA Member States will be discussed.
The language of the conference will be English with simultaneous translation in French/Arabic/English.
